In Memory of Harley

Harly, my Primary Guinea Pig, passed away this morning. While he'd been losing weight and was obviously aging, I'm still a bit surprised. Up until late yesterday he had been active and eating well, but last night when I cleaned his cage it was obvious his condition was worsening. He wasn't as active and he didn't eat as much hay as he usually does. When I realized he wasn't eating his favorite food (dandelion greens) I knew it was close to the end.

This morning I found him curled up on the floor of his cage, outside his pigloo, and I thought he had already passed. I noticed he was breathing, albeit very shallowly, and he wasn't responding when I picked him up--he was as limp as a dishrag. Nic called up one of the emergency clinics and they agreed to help him to his last rest even though they usually don't handle exotics.

On the way to the e-vet, he passed after taking a few last gasps while I was scratching his ears.

I adopted Harley from our local Humane Society, just before September 11, so I've had him for just under five years. He was a good little pig who was always hungry and he lovedlovedloved to eat dandelions.

I miss him already.
